Hotel rooms hold few surprises. The heating responds, the hot water never runs dry, the bed is firm and wide, and a night desk looks after the door. A rented apartment can be a wonderful setting for nuru, often larger, quieter and more private than any hotel room, but it can also conceal a boiler the size of a shoebox, a staircase closer to a ladder and a mattress that sags in the middle.
