The nuru repertoire, and what sits beside it

Eight techniques, each a variation on the same principle: warmth, weight, and a hand that does not lift. Beside them sits the longest booking, a whole night, where the gel is simply given more room.

Eight entries is still a short list, and it is kept short on purpose. Each one is a variation on a single idea, a surface made slippery enough that a hand, a forearm or the whole length of a body can travel from shoulder to ankle without once lifting, and what separates them is the medium, the coverage, or the number of people, never the principle. Three of them lean on customs older than the gel, warm oil, the unclothed bath and the tantric breath, and they earned a place because a nuru therapist brings the same unbroken stroke to each of them, not because the list wanted lengthening.

Nuru and soapy are not the same thing

They are confused often enough to be worth separating. Nuru is worked in gel: heavy, odourless, warmed before the bottle is opened, slow to leave the skin, and able to hold its weight for an hour without renewal. Soapy is worked in foam and warm water, which is lighter, quicker, and refreshed continually rather than sustained. The gel asks that the room be warm before she arrives. The soap asks only that there be somewhere it is sensible to be wet. If what appeals is the unbroken glide, the long stroke that never breaks contact, that is nuru; if it is warmth and water and the washing itself taken as the treatment, that is soapy.

The other three name something other than the medium. Body to body names the coverage: the contact runs the full length rather than ending at the wrists, and it can be carried in gel or in warm oil. Four-hand names the arithmetic: two therapists, one rhythm, and a body that can no longer track where the next pressure is coming from. Sensual names the pace, the slowest of the five, and it is what most people mean when they cannot yet say what they mean.

Oil, bare skin and breath

The three newest entries each carry the nuru stroke somewhere else. Nuru oil massage trades the gel for warm oil and lets her hands do honest work before the long glides begin. Naked nuru simply names what the gel has always demanded, bare skin on both sides and no draping at all. Tantric nuru times every stroke to your exhale and counts stillness as part of the massage rather than a break from it.

A first booking

Take an hour of nuru or of sensual, or ninety minutes if the evening allows. An hour is enough for the gel to make its case; the extra half hour is where the session stops resembling an appointment. Four-hand sits better as a second booking than a first, because it is easier to appreciate once you know what one pair of hands does with the same gel. Say which of the eight you want, since they make quite different demands of a room, and say if you are unsure; that is an ordinary thing to write and easily answered.

Nuru massage in Amsterdam, matched to the evening you have

A technique is easier to choose from your situation than from a description. If you have just come off a long flight and the day is still on your skin, start with soapy, and add gel afterwards if the evening can stretch to two hours. If your room is draughty or its heating cannot be trusted, body to body in warm oil holds its warmth where a thin film of gel would cool. If it is the slippery glide you have read about and the thermostat does what it is told, book nuru and give it ninety minutes. If you are unsure what you want, sensual is the unhurried middle ground, and if you have tried everything above already, four hands is the one still waiting.

What every entry has in common

Whichever you pick, the terms underneath stay fixed. Every technique is outcall only, to a hotel room, an apartment or a private home anywhere in the centre, and to airport hotels at Schiphol once arranged. Every one costs a single guest the same hourly figure with one therapist and twice it with two, and the eight-hour night, sold as one block, is built around nuru or body to body. Each arrives in one bag with everything it needs, and each is booked with the same short message, confirmed in writing, with a therapist at the door forty to sixty minutes later. Our side-by-side comparison of nuru, soapy and body to body lays out the differences in full if you would like them before deciding.

One more practical point: the technique is not locked in by the booking. If she arrives and the room is colder than you expected, or halfway through you find you would prefer oil to gel, say so. The medium can change without the price changing, provided what she has brought allows it.
