Nuru Massage After a Sauna, Pool or Gym: When to Book It
A hotel sauna or evening swim can be a fine prelude to nuru, or a clumsy one. How long to leave between them, and what sweat, chlorine and heat do to the gel.
Plenty of Amsterdam hotels keep a small spa in the basement: a sauna, perhaps a steam room, a narrow pool, a gym looking out over a courtyard. Guests who spend the early evening down there often come back upstairs loose, warm and in exactly the mood for a nuru massage, and then wonder whether booking one straight away is clever or careless. The honest answer is that the sauna, the pool and the gym each make a good prelude, and each asks for a different gap before the gel comes out. Get the gap right and the spa does half the preparation for you.
After a sauna: a head start that needs to settle
A sauna does something the session would otherwise spend its first quarter of an hour doing, which is warming the body right through. That is a genuine advantage. The difficulty is that a body fresh out of the heat keeps sweating for a good while after the cabin door has closed behind it, and sweat is water. Poured onto skin that is still beading, the gel thins wherever the moisture sits, runs instead of holding its layer, and the long glide turns uneven until the skin has dried and been rinsed.
So leave a gap of around forty-five minutes. Take a cool shower as you leave the cabin, drink a glass or two of water, and rest in a robe until your forehead has stopped glistening. By the time she arrives the deep warmth is still there, but the surface has calmed, and the opening shower can be a brief, warm one rather than the longer hot soak a cold guest needs.
After a swim: rinse the pool away
A swim leaves the body cooler rather than warmer, and it leaves chlorine on skin and in hair. Chlorine does the gel no harm, but its smell returns strongly in a warm, closed room, and pool water tends to leave skin feeling faintly tight. The temptation afterwards is a body lotion, and that is the one thing to resist, since lotion lying beneath the gel breaks its film into patches.
Shower properly with soap as soon as you leave the pool, wash your hair if it went under, and give yourself twenty minutes or so to warm back up in the room. If the water left you properly chilled, say so when she arrives; the room and the gel can both be taken a little warmer to make up for it.
After the gym: calm down first
A hard workout leaves the heart quick, the skin hot and damp, and the body restless in a way that sits badly with a technique built on slowness. Allow about an hour. Shower, eat something small if the session will run long, and let your breathing return to its resting pace before anything is poured. A brisk walk or a gentle stretch needs no gap at all.
It helps to know what the gel will and will not do for a body that has worked hard. It carries broad, even weight along the whole length of you, which feels wonderful on tired legs and a stiff back. It does not dig into a single knot, because there is no grip in it to hold a spot. If one particular calf or shoulder is complaining after the gym, a body-to-body massage in oil can work into it where gel simply slides past.
Nuru massage after the spa: a simple timetable
- Sauna: about forty-five minutes, with a cool rinse and water in between.
- Steam room: about thirty minutes, since the skin is wet rather than overheated.
- Pool: a soapy shower straight away, then twenty minutes to warm up.
- Hard workout: roughly an hour, with a shower and a light snack.
- An easy walk: no gap needed.
Because the WhatsApp reply lands within about ten minutes, and the ride to a central address runs twenty to thirty minutes, the neatest arrangement is to write as you leave the spa floor. By the time she knocks, the gap has more or less looked after itself. The page on nuru in your hotel room covers the rest of what to get ready upstairs.
What about the other order?
Heading to the sauna after a nuru session is rarely worth the trouble. The session already leaves a warmth that lingers for hours, most hotel spas have shut by the time a late booking ends, and gel that has not been rinsed away completely does not belong in a shared sauna or pool. If you really want both, give the closing shower the same seriousness the spa's own notices would ask for, and take your time over the hair.
A winter note
In the dark months some guests spend the evening at one of the city's large public saunas and then travel back across town to their hotel or flat. A walk or a tram ride through a cold, wet street undoes a surprising share of that warmth. In that case the gap takes care of itself and the task changes: get in, get the heating on, take a hot shower and only then send the message. The note on keeping the gel warm explains why arriving cold matters more than arriving tired, and the nuru service page describes the session that follows.
