Nuru Massage on a Houseboat: Low Ceilings, Warm Gel
Nuru massage on a houseboat in Amsterdam: cabin beds, small showers, limited hot water and a wet gangway. What works on the water and what to send us.
Around two and a half thousand houseboats line Amsterdam's canals and the IJ, and a growing number of them are rented to visitors. Staying on one is memorable: the light off the water, the gentle movement when a tour boat passes, a deck with a view of the gables. It also means living in a small space built to different rules from a hotel room. A nuru massage on a houseboat is very much possible, and guests who book one often describe it as the highlight of their stay, but it needs a little more thought about the bed, the water and the heat.
The bed and the ceiling
Houseboat bedrooms are usually below the waterline or in a low cabin, with ceilings under two metres and beds built into the hull. Two things matter for the gel. First, the therapist needs at least one open side of the bed to kneel on and move along; a bed boxed in on three sides by walls is difficult. Second, she needs enough height above the bed to move without striking a beam. When you write, describe the bed briefly: its size, whether it is built in, and whether one side is open. If the cabin is too tight, the living area often has space for the sheet on a firm sofa bed or on thick mats on the floor.
Nuru massage on a houseboat: hot water and the shower
Many houseboats run on small electric boilers that hold a limited amount of hot water, sometimes enough for only one long shower before a recharge. A nuru session needs a short rinse at the start and a longer one at the end, so plan the water:
- do not shower yourself in the hour before the therapist arrives, unless the boiler is large;
- check that the boiler is switched on and full;
- tell us if the shower is a handheld head over a small tray, which is common on boats.
The therapist can keep the opening rinse brief and use warm water carefully at the end. Where hot water is very limited, the closing rinse can be done partly with warm towels.
Heat on the water
Boats lose heat quickly through the hull and the windows, especially in spring and autumn, and many use a single stove or electric heater. Turn it up well before the session, close hatches and curtains, and keep the cabin door shut. Gel on skin in a cool cabin is uncomfortable; a warm one makes the glide feel luxurious. In summer the opposite problem can occur, and a cabin under a sunny deck can get hot, so open it up in the afternoon and close it again before the session. Getting on board
Houseboats have no bell and no reception, and addresses can be vague: a quay name with a range of numbers, and a boat among several. Send a precise description. The house number painted on the hull or the letterbox, the colour of the boat, and whether there is a gangway, a gate or steps down from the quay. At night, leave a deck light on. In rain, mention if the gangway is slippery. The therapist will message from the quay if she cannot find it.
Neighbours and the quiet
Boats sit close together and sound travels over water. A session itself is quiet, but music, voices on deck and the shower pump can carry. Keep windows closed and music low, as you would in any shared building. Moored boats also move slightly when larger vessels pass, which most guests find oddly calming during the glide.
Rates and booking for a boat
Nothing changes in the price for a houseboat. A single guest with one therapist pays €180 for an hour, €270 for ninety minutes, €360 for two hours and €540 for three, and an overnight is €1,250; every row, including couples and two therapists, is shown on each therapist profile. Two therapists rarely fit in a boat cabin, so four hands on the water is worth discussing first. A first booking with the house is confirmed with half of the fee sent by card, Revolut, Wise or crypto, and the other half is handed over on board in notes, by card or in crypto.
Write nuru, houseboat, the quay and the boat description, the time and the length on WhatsApp, with a line about the bed and the boiler. A named confirmation comes back in about ten minutes, and she reaches boats along the central canals forty to sixty minutes later. On the water as on land, guests must be twenty-one or older.
