Nuru vs Thai Massage: What This House Offers Instead
Nuru vs Thai massage: two Asian traditions with almost nothing in common. Why this house does not offer Thai stretching, and which technique to book instead.
Travellers who have spent time in Southeast Asia often search for nuru vs Thai massage when they arrive in Amsterdam, expecting the two to be close relatives. They are not. Both come from Asia and both are called massage, but one is a clothed, stretching-based bodywork done on a floor mat, and the other is a gel technique done on a bed with full-body contact. This house offers nuru and a small closed list of related techniques. It does not offer Thai massage. This note explains the difference and suggests what to book if Thai is what brought you here.
What Thai massage is
Traditional Thai massage comes from Thailand, with roots in Buddhist temple medicine and influences from Indian and Chinese practice. It is usually given on a mat on the floor, with the recipient fully clothed in loose garments and no oil. The practitioner uses hands, thumbs, elbows, knees and feet to press along lines of the body and moves the recipient through a series of assisted stretches, sometimes quite vigorous. It is active, firm and often compared to yoga done to you. People leave feeling stretched and energised rather than sleepy.
What nuru is
Nuru comes from Japan. It uses a warm, clear gel made from seaweed extract, spread over both bodies so that friction almost disappears. The therapist uses her whole body rather than her hands, gliding in long continuous movements over the guest on a waterproof sheet. There is no stretching, no pressure on points and no clothing. The effect is heavy, calm and deeply relaxing. The idea is set out fully in the guide to what nuru is.
Nuru vs Thai massage, point by point
- Origin: Thai from Thailand's temple tradition; nuru from Japanese bathhouse culture.
- Setting: Thai on a floor mat; nuru on a bed over a waterproof sheet.
- Clothing: Thai clothed; nuru without.
- Medium: Thai none; nuru warm gel.
- Technique: Thai pressure and assisted stretching; nuru full-body glide.
- Feeling afterwards: Thai stretched and alert; nuru heavy and sleepy.
Why this house does not offer Thai massage
Thai massage is a specialised discipline that takes years of training, and it has little in common with what the women on this roster do. Offering it badly would serve nobody. The house keeps to a short list it does well: nuru, soapy, body to body, four hands, sensual, tantra, naked and erotic oil massage, all given as outcall to hotel rooms and apartments. Guests who want genuine Thai bodywork for a stiff back or tired hips should visit a Thai massage studio during the day; Amsterdam has several.
If you liked Thai massage, which technique fits?
It depends on what you liked about it.
- If you liked feeling your whole body worked: nuru, which covers the body from shoulders to feet in long passes.
- If you liked the firmness: body to body massage in warm oil, which allows more pressure and holds than gel, described on the body to body page.
- If you liked the calm, meditative side: tantra, which opens with slow breathing.
- If you liked leaving refreshed rather than drowsy: soapy massage, built on lather and warm water.
None of these will stretch your hamstrings or press your feet into your back. They are slower, closer and more relaxing.
A note on the Thai soapy tradition
Some travellers associate Thailand with soapy massage rather than traditional Thai. That is a different thing again, rooted in bathhouse culture rather than temple medicine, and it is offered here: foam, warm water and a therapist working in your hotel bathroom. If that is the Thai experience you had in mind, book soapy.
Rates and booking
Whatever you choose from the list, the rate with one therapist and one guest is the same: €180 for an hour, €270 for ninety minutes and €360 for two hours. Two therapists for one guest are €360 an hour, and every figure sits on each therapist profile. A first booking with the house is confirmed with half of the fee sent by card, Revolut, Wise or crypto, and the remainder is paid in the room in cash, by card or in crypto. Write the technique, your hotel or street, the time and the length on WhatsApp. A named confirmation arrives in about ten minutes, and the therapist reaches the centre forty to sixty minutes later. Guests from Bangkok or anywhere else must be twenty-one or older.
