Nuru Massage With a New Tattoo: How Long to Wait
Nuru massage with a new tattoo: why warm gel and long rinses should wait until the skin has closed, how to tell the therapist, and what to book meanwhile.
Amsterdam has a long tattoo tradition, from the sailors' parlours near the old harbour to the studios scattered across the centre today, and plenty of visitors leave with fresh ink. Some of them also want to book the gel during the same trip. A nuru massage with a new tattoo raises a fair question: is it a problem for the skin, and how long should you wait? This note gives the practical answer, with the usual caveat that your tattoo artist's aftercare instructions come first.
Why fresh ink and gel do not mix at first
A new tattoo is, for its first days, an open wound across the treated area. Tattoo artists typically ask clients to avoid soaking it in baths, pools and saunas, to keep it clean and dry apart from gentle washing, and to avoid friction and pressure while it heals. A nuru session involves several of those things at once: long periods in warm water, gel spread across large areas of skin, and the weight of another body gliding over it. None of that is good for a tattoo in its first stage of healing, and any product on broken skin can sting or cause irritation.
Nuru massage with a new tattoo: how long to wait
Follow your artist's instructions over anything written here. As a general guide, most people find that:
- The first three to four days: the tattoo is raw and weeping. Do not book a gel session that covers the area.
- The first two weeks: the skin is peeling and itchy. Soaking and friction can pull at flakes and affect the ink.
- Two to four weeks: the surface has usually closed, although the skin underneath is still settling. Many artists say gentle contact is fine from around this point.
- After a month: for most small and medium tattoos, a normal session is fine.
Large pieces, such as a full back or a sleeve, often take longer. If in doubt, message the studio and ask.
If the tattoo is small and out of the way
A small, fresh tattoo on a wrist, an ankle or the inside of an arm does not necessarily rule out a session. It can be covered with the protective film your artist provides, and the therapist can keep the gel and the glide away from that area. The shower is the harder part, since the opening and closing rinses involve a lot of water; a guest with a fresh tattoo should keep that area out of the stream as far as possible. Say exactly where the tattoo is and how old it is in your first message, and the reply will tell you honestly whether the booking makes sense or whether another technique would be kinder.
What to book instead during the healing days
If the tattoo is on the back, where most of the glide happens, nuru is better left for a later trip or the end of this one. Alternatives exist. A sensual massage in oil can avoid a large area of skin more easily than gel, since hands can be placed precisely, although oil on a healing tattoo is also a bad idea, so the area must still be avoided. A soapy session is not suitable, because it is built around water and lather. The sensual massage page describes the slower, hand-led alternative.
Telling the therapist
Be specific. Where the tattoo is, how big, and how many days old. If the artist gave you a film or a balm, keep them in the room. The therapist will look at the area before starting and will not touch it if it looks fresh. She is used to guests with tattoos, old and new, and will not be surprised by the question.
After healing: tattoos and the gel
Once a tattoo has fully healed, nuru gel is gentle on it. The gel is water-based, contains no perfume and rinses away completely, and many guests notice that the skin over older tattoos looks brighter and softer after a session. The composition is set out in the guide to nuru gel.
Rates and booking
With one therapist and one guest, sessions cost €180 for an hour, €270 for ninety minutes and €360 for two hours, whether nuru or sensual. Two therapists for one guest are €360 an hour. A first booking with the house is confirmed with half sent ahead by card, Revolut, Wise or crypto, and the balance is settled when she arrives, in notes, by card or in crypto. Send the technique, the address, the time, the length and the tattoo details on WhatsApp; the reply arrives in about ten minutes and she comes forty to sixty minutes later. Inked or not, every guest must be twenty-one or older.
