She worked out early that the difference between a good hour and a forgettable one lies almost entirely in the first ten minutes, and she spends them generously: the lamp, the temperature, the towels, the small business of arriving. What follows is unhurried and very warm, gel-heavy and close, with a rhythm she holds steady rather than varies. Portuguese with the people she loves, English with everyone else, and both of them spoken quickly. The late bookings suit her best: an early walk along the empty Damrak is how she closes them before she sleeps, and twenty-four is a good age for that.

Naya decides which bookings she takes and may decline any of them; she sets the limits for what a session includes, says what they are, and may end a visit at any point, as the terms set out.
